Changes to child sponsorship
Our world continues to rapidly change: conflicts, weather-related disasters, and other challenges have devastated the lives of children, leaving a lasting impact on their well-being and future opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic only worsened existing inequalities. We've learned we can do even more to help these children by evolving the way we work to be more responsive to their needs and by reducing administrative costs. That's why we are making an important change, and we want you to be part of it.

Your Ongoing Support with Save the Children Changes Lives
Save the Children pioneered child sponsorship in the early 1900s, bringing education, protection and safety to more than 1 billion children.
We've witnessed how much the world has changed since then, along with the needs of children, their families, and communities. Factors like climate crisis, conflict and growing inequality pose different issues to them. For over 100 years, we've consistently innovated and adapted our programs to remain a lean and agile global organization, ready to meet them where and when they need us the most.
Save the Children has found that the most effective way to help children now is through a community-led approach, guided by those closest to the challenges they face — and enabling us to find sustainable solutions together.
Our programs are designed to help many children, families and communities wherever the need is greatest. So, you can take comfort in knowing that you're giving to an organization that addresses children's needs holistically, collaborating with communities, partner organizations and families to adapt as those needs change.
Changes to Child Sponsorship
The stakes for children have never been higher. Around the world, children are living in conflict zones. Kids in rural America are suffering from food insecurity. Globally, far too many children are out of school, and the number facing risks from the climate crisis is even higher.
Save the Children has been a pioneer in child sponsorship since the early 1900s. We've witnessed how much the world has changed since then, along with the needs of children, their families, and communities. For over 100 years, we've consistently innovated and adapted our programs to remain a lean and agile global organization.
That's why we're transforming the way we work now—to better meet the evolving needs of children and communities. We're truly grateful that you've chosen to be a part of this journey. With your sustained support, we can create even more lasting, positive change for children everywhere.
Your gift amount will stay the same and will continue to be combined with that of other donors to meet both immediate and ongoing needs of children in the U.S. and around the world. This includes, but is now not limited to, areas where we currently operate child sponsorship programs.
Rest assured; the child(ren) you were sponsoring will continue to be supported through Save the Children for as long as they choose to remain enrolled in our programs in their community—as always, we're unwavering in our commitment to the children and communities we work with. We're partnering with community leaders and our country offices to develop the best transition plans, ensuring we can continue making a significant and sustainable impact, tailored to their needs and challenges.
Thank you for your longstanding support and commitment. Together, we're building a brighter future for children everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are you stopping child sponsorship?
As our world changes due to factors like the climate crisis, conflict and growing inequality, the needs of the children, families and communities we work with change too. That is why we consistently transform the way we work, innovating and adapting our programs to ensure the best and most inclusive experience possible for all children in the communities where we work.
We recently reviewed our sponsorship programs, hearing from communities, country office staff, supporters like you and most importantly, the children themselves. This revealed that we can do even more to support children and their communities when and where they need us most, which is why we will no longer off the option to sponsor individual children or programs. Instead, we’ve transformed to a more flexible, unrestricted and efficient approach that will support the collective needs of children and communities facing the most urgent challenges today.
This change also allows us to reduce administrative costs so your donations can go further and help us deliver programs for even more children. We aim to create a more inclusive and child-centered experience that allocates resources more efficiently to reach children and communities with the greatest need, providing consistent funding and high-quality programs.
When will this change take place?
This change is taking place throughout 2025.
Will my gift stay the same?
Yes, your recurring gift amount will remain the same. Your generous donations will continue to be combined with gifts from other donors to meet both immediate and ongoing needs of children in the U.S and around the world. This includes, but is not limited to, areas where we currently operate child sponsorship initiatives. If you wish to discuss your gift or make changes, please contact us at supportercare@savechildren.org or 1-800-728-3843, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (EST).
What will happen to the child I was sponsoring?
Children will continue to receive support from Save the Children in their community as long as they are enrolled in our programs—designed to be long-term, sustainable and locally-led, providing ongoing benefits for them, such as better access to education, healthcare and protection. Our aim is to ensure every child can thrive and reach their full potential. By combining your contributions with other supporters, we can reach kids and communities with the greatest need, while also decreasing overhead costs and providing our teams with flexibility to expand our reach.
Will I still receive updates?
You’ll continue to hear about the impact you're making through children's stories, but instead of sponsoring and receiving ongoing updates about one child, you’ll hear about multiple children and their communities who are benefiting. You’re helping many children, their families and their communities for years to come.
Will I be able to correspond with a child?
While being able to correspond with a child has been a special part of the child sponsorship experience for supporters and children over the years, we’ve also learned that letter writing was creating further inequities amongst children—those who received letters and those who didn’t. We’re committed to ensuring that all children, everywhere, feel included, so correspondence with a child will no longer be available. By removing this option, we’re also able to reduce our operational costs, which helps your money go even further to support the children in our programs.
Can I say goodbye to the child I’ve been sponsoring or keep in touch once the sponsorship program ends?
You may send a letter before March 31, 2025, as noted on your transfer letter and we’ll do our best to deliver it to the child you sponsored. In our new model, direct correspondence with a child will no longer be available. This decision was made to ensure equality among all children supported by our programs, avoiding situations where children might feel disappointed if they don’t receive a letter. It also significantly reduces administrative costs, allowing a greater portion of donations to directly benefit the children.
How is this change better for children?
Save the Children’s priority is to ensure children have a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and are protected from harm. Our shifting from individual child sponsorship —and stopping activities like letter-writing and visits to our sponsorship programs—allows our team to spend more time and resources on our program work. Likewise, it enables a more inclusive, fair and enjoyable experience for all children in the community, as a majority never receive gifts or visits from their sponsor.
Furthermore, this shift allows us to be more agile and responsive to the children we work with as well as the changing needs of the communities, ensuring we can address the most pressing issues such as inequality, climate crisis, conflict and poverty. By reducing administrative costs, we can extend the impact of every donation, benefiting more children in the U.S and around the world.
What makes Save the Children unique—why should I continue to support you vs. other non-profits?
Save the Children is a global humanitarian nonprofit and the world’s leading independent child rights organization, focusing on children’s health, education and protection. Founded by Eglantyne Jebb over 100 years ago in the aftermath of World War I, we were the first global movement for children, boldly declaring that they have rights. Backed by this ambitious vision and a century of leading expertise, we’re one of the most highly regarded charities in the world. With an average of 85¢ of every dollar going directly to programs for children and families, our proven program responsibility and fiscal accountability in over 100 countries is consistently recognized, earning high ratings from independent services like Charity Watch. We’ve received the highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator, whose ratings are updated annually. We’re also accredited by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance.
As a Save the Children supporter, you can be sure you’re part of a movement dedicated to creating lasting positive change—for, and with, children.
How will my ongoing experience as a recurring donor differ from my existing child sponsorship?
Child sponsorship enabled our supporters to learn more about an individual child or country programs through correspondence and annual updates. Our monthly recurring program will allow you to hear more about the impact you’re having on a specific issue you care about, such as the climate crisis, conflict, inequality, or poverty in the U.S. You’ll receive regular updates on how your giving is helping create lasting positive change for and with children. You’ll also have the opportunity to hear from children, community leaders, teachers, parents, Save the Children staff and partner organizations we collaborate with on the change we’re creating together. We aim to strengthen our supporter community around our shared commitment to addressing the major challenges that threaten the well-being of children in the U.S. and around the world. We’re working to provide more opportunities for meaningful connection, including webinars, online program visits, focus groups, and volunteer and advocacy engagement.
Additionally, while in child sponsorship donations have always been combined with gifts from other supporters—allowing us to fund community projects that provide benefits to multiple children—funding was tied to school-based programs in countries where we operate child sponsorship. Monthly donations to Save the Children will similarly be combined with gifts from other donors to meet both immediate and ongoing needs of children in the U.S and around the world. However, funding is no longer limited to countries where we have sponsorship programs. This flexibility allows us to support children when and where they need us the most.
Why did I get introduced to a new child to sponsor and then hear about child sponsorship ending later?
We understand this may be confusing, and we’re here to help clarify. Save the Children is transitioning from offering individual child sponsorship to an unrestricted monthly giving program. This new approach will allow your donations to be more flexible, addressing the immediate and ongoing needs of children and communities more effectively.
We’re committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved. However, until our new system is fully in place, you might still be introduced to a new child if the one you were sponsoring becomes ineligible—for instance, if they move out of the community.
One of the key benefits of this change is its flexibility. It ensures that we can support children when and where they need us the most, without funding being tied to school-based programs in countries where we operate child sponsorship. We appreciate your understanding and continued support during this transition. For specific questions related to your sponsorship, please contact us at supportercare@savechildren.org or 1-800-728-3843, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (EST).
What happens to the gift sponsorship I gave a family member, friend or colleague?
As you are our primary contact for this gift, we will not communicate directly with the person you gifted the sponsorship to. If you would like to share this change with them, please do. Otherwise, there’s no action needed from you now other than your continued support. Your gift will go even further to help kids starting in 2025. You’ll continue to receive updates on the impact of your recurring donation through stories from children and communities, including those in countries where we previously offered child sponsorship.
How does a Save the Children monthly program work?
The recurring program allows monthly supporters to provide consistent, unrestricted support for Save the Children’s work in the U.S. and around the world, while offering a personalized supporter experience, connecting you with the causes you are passionate about. You can choose the issue that matters to you the most and we’ll keep you informed with customized updates on how your monthly donation is helping us partner with children, communities and local organizations to tackle that issue and more.
This unique initiative helps build a better tomorrow by collectively addressing the issues that impact children and their communities, such as the climate crisis, conflict, inequality and poverty in the U.S. In our highly interconnected world, we understand that we cannot simply solve one systemic issue in isolation. One of the most effective strategies for Save the Children to create lasting positive change for all children is to combine your contributions with those of other supporters to holistically address the needs of children and quickly pivot as these needs evolve within communities.
Through this program, you’ll also receive resources to help you advocate for children, amplifying your impact. To learn more about the significant difference you’re making for children and their communities, please watch this video.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
Please contact our Supporter Experience Center at supportercare@savechildren.org or 1-844-577-6676, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm (EST). Or, if you have a dedicated Prospect Manager noted on your transfer letter, you may reach out to them directly.
How will the charge appear on my credit card?
Your gift will show as “Save the Children” on credit card statements.
