As you’ve heard, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Türkiye (Turkey) in the early hours of February 6 at 4:17AM local time. According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicenter was 14.2 miles east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep province, with a depth of 14.9 miles. Nurdagi is located along the Türkiye-Syria border and the earthquake was felt in several countries across the region, including Syria and Lebanon. Hundreds of aftershocks, some as strong as 6.7 magnitude, continued to be felt in southern and central Türkiye for hours after the initial quake. Almost 20,000 people have been killed by the initial earthquake and aftershocks. At least 16,546 people have died in Turkey. In Syria, authorities reported 3,162 deaths. People are trapped and homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure have been destroyed under layers of rubble. Thousands of people, including many refugees, are in need of shelter, food, and water in southern Turkey and northern Syria after the world's deadliest seismic event in more than a decade.
